It’s something out of a nightmare — a glass of red wine spilling on your pristine, white carpet. When this happens, it seems like a catastrophe. Even carpets that aren’t bright white can appear to be ruined by a knocked-over glass of red wine. But are those carpets damaged beyond repair? Can you get red wine stains out of carpet?
How to Remove Red Wine Stains From Carpet
If you find yourself in need of red wine stain removal, follow this three-step process.
Step One: Soak It up ASAP
The moment the wine spills, you should be on your way to getting a paper towel or rag to start soaking it up. Do not rub at the stain — you’ll only rub it deeper into the carpet. Blot the wine, working from the outside edges of the stain to the middle.
Step Two: Wet the Area
Once you’ve blotted up as much as possible to stop it from setting, pour cold water on it and blot it dry to try to get up any wine that has already started working its way into the carpet fibers.
Step Three: Apply Salt
Once you’ve dabbed up as much of the wine as you can, pour table salt over the whole stain. The salt will absorb any moisture, so if the stain is dry, pour a little more water on to moisten it first. Let the salt sit on the stain as long as possible. It should turn pink as it draws in the wine. Once the area seems to have dried, scoop away any loose salt and vacuum up the rest.

You may be surprised at how effective the salt method above is at removing red wine stains. However, some carpet cleaning situations require something more.
